What is Enterprise Designer?

“a business has a voice. You can usually hear it -- authentic or unauthentic -- most obviously and transparently, on its Web site. Even before the last graphic finishes downloading, you can usually tell if the company speaks with passion, if it’s lost or uninterested, or if it’s online just because some consultant said it has to be. You can tell if the business has some perspective on itself or whether it’s all wrapped up in being the Number One Provider of Something, Anything, Please! You can tell if it wants to talk with you or just to pick your pocket. You can tell if the people who work there really care or if they always carry their résumé with them, just in case. You can tell if the company is basically lying or basically telling the truth.”

If your Organization is a collection of separate parts with no overall unity then you need Enterprise Designer. You will learn how any organization can be classified into five key areas. You will discover the 26 letters of the business alphabet. This business architecture gives you the tools to model your Organization quickly and effectively. You can then make better decisions now.

To understand and design a better organization you need three things.

First, you need a Framework, a way to organize information that you discover or create.

Next, you need a Methodology, a systematic approach to discovering, organizing and presenting that information to different audiences.

Last, you need an Application to manage and store all that information because you cannot do it any other way. Enterprise Designer is both a Framework and Methodology rolled into one. You will learn how to organize information and how to gather it.

One application you can use is Metastorm ProVision. Metastorm is a suite of applications that enables many people to work together to build and maintain the key information. Borrowing techniques used to write software, Metastorm allows multiple people to work on different parts of the organization simultaneously. As the models grow, everyone in the Organization can watch and comment on the progress through their Web Browser. The Enterprise Designer Institute has considerable expertise in the use of Metastorm ProVision. In fact we wrote the only reference book on the application!

Of course there are other frameworks. John Zachman was the first to create one. Others have followed, TOGAF, Archimate, ETOM. Enterprise Designer is the simplest of them all, making it much easier to understand, explain and manage any kind of business. Enterprise Designer has been called a 'framework of frameworks'. You can use it to understand other frameworks and see what their strengths and weaknesses are. You can also use it in combination with other frameworks to have the best of both worlds.
